Change of Name
2016 began a bright new chapter in the history of our school. From 1st January2016, Banksia Grove Catholic Primary became known as St John Paul II Catholic Primary School, Banksia Grove. We took on the name of the patron of our Catholic Community here in Banksia Grove, which will clearly identify us as a Catholic Community.
Mr Chris Lamb was appointed as the first Principal of St John Paul II Catholic Primary School. At this time, we are the only Catholic Primary school in Australia bearing his name.
Pope John Paul II was born Karol Józef Wojtyla on 18th May 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. He was ordained in 1946, became the bishop of Ombi in 1958, and became the archbishop of Krakow in 1964. He was made a cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1967, and in 1978 became the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years. John Paul II travelled widely and visited Perth in 1986. He was a vocal advocate for human rights and used his influence to effect political change. He died in Italy in 2005. It was announced in July 2013 that he would be declared a Saint in April of the following year. His feast day is celebrated on 22nd October.
